Trusted Vitamin D Manufacturers | Rain Nutrience
Rain Nutrience is proud to be the UK’s leading full-service dietary supplement manufacturer, including Vitamin D. Vitamin D refers to a group of compounds that contains, among others, vitamin D2 and vitamin D3. Vitamin D helps to regulate the amount of calcium in the body and as such is crucial for healthy bones, teeth and muscles.
Last summer the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities released a report exploring new methods for improving vitamin D intake in the general population, highlighting the importance of vitamin D for public health.
Vitamin D supplements are therefore an essential product for nutraceutical brands looking to expand their range into health and well-being.
Sources of Vitamin D
There are many sources of vitamin D, both natural and manufactured. Natural food sources that are high in vitamin D include oily fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines, as well as egg yolks and red meat.
Vitamin D may also be sourced from algae-derived and lanolin-derived alternatives.
How is Vitamin D Manufactured?
Vitamin D is produced through extraction from natural food sources or chemical synthesis from lanoline (sheep’s wool) or algae and lichens. This process involved using ultraviolet (UV) light to convert precursor molecules, such as cholesterol, into active forms of Vitamin D.
- Natural food sources of vitamin D: require minimal processing which may appeal to the consumer’s growing demand for supplements derived from whole food sources. Whilst convenient for the consumer, these sources of vitamin D often contain relatively low concentrations of vitamin D and are less scalable for manufacturing purposes.
- Algae-derived vitamin D: is vegan-friendly, sustainable, and may appeal to the environmentally conscious consumer. However, Algae-derived vitamin D has limited availability and is more expensive to produce. Vitamin D is extracted from algae using water, plant ethanol and applying pressure.
- Lanolin-derived vitamin D: Alternatively, nutraceutical brands may consider lanolin-derived vitamin D. Whilst being animal-derived and not suitable for vegans it offers a cost-effective option with high bioavailability. Sheep’s wool is first washed and cleaned to remove impurities before a detergent is applied to extract the crude lanolin. The crude lanolin is then saponified and centrifuged to remove unusable components before undergoing a solvent wash and chromatography. The extracted cholesterol is then used in a series of chemical reactions to produce a vitamin D precursor.
